Art and Life Skills at White River School
The Art and Life Skills program at White River School offers students in Pre-K through 5th grade an immersive experience in visual art and practical creativity that supports their emotional, cognitive, and social development. Rooted in the rhythms of the seasons and a deep connection to place, the class engages students in meaningful, process-based artmaking that includes ceramics, sewing, knitting, collage, therapeutic painting, sculpture, form drawing, and printmaking.
Students work with a wide range of artistic media—from watercolor and plaster to fiber and found natural materials—developing not only technical skills but also imagination, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Lessons are thoughtfully aligned with students' developmental stages and invite reflection, observation, and care for self, others, and the environment. Through partnerships with local artists and organizations in the White River Junction area, the program also fosters stewardship, community connection, and place-based learning that grounds artistic practice in the world around us.
